18 Plus Drinking Age! Let’s Make it Happen!

According to my boys over at Hypebot, a consortium of major college and university presidents recently called for the US to lower the legal drinking age to 18. They point out the fact that there are only 3 other countries in the world who’s legal drinking age is 21.  The Ukraine, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Hypebot is calling for the music industry to come out in vocal support of lowering the drinking age to 18.  I agree one hundred percent, for two simple reasons.

One, if someone 18 years old is old enough to fight in a war for this country, they should be allowed to legally drink in this country.  That’s pretty straightforward reasoning.  I’ve always though it was ridiculous to expect someone to fight and die for his or her country when they’re not even allowed to hit a local bar.

Two, as far as the music industry goes, before the legal drinking age was raised to 21, it was a lot easier for independent artists to sustain their careers by playing live gigs at smaller clubs.   Aside from the higher profit you can get at 18 plus events, in my humble opinion as an artist, 18 plus gigs just tend to be more fun in general.

Let’s face it, the college market is the best market for up and coming artists.  They are much more open-minded when it comes to exposure to new music.

The U.S really needs to change the legal drinking age to 18, whatever it takes.  Whether it’s alcohol education programs for 18-20 year olds, or whatever.  It’s time for us to face the fact that whether or not it’s legal, most college kids drink anyway.

As much as I hate the major labels sometimes, I’d have to admit that they could help tremendously with the fight to lower the drinking age.  They have the money to pay lobbyists to harass politicians.  And the benefit would be to them, as well.   Bringing the 18-20 year olds “back into the fold” at club events pretty much benefits the entire music industry.  And in an industry that’s constantly whining about lower profit margins and sales figures, you’d think the industry leaders would be all over anything that could boost income.

The legal age drinking in United States is 21. Many people in the country believe that they should be allow to buy alcohol at age 18. If you are allow to vote at the age of 18, get drafted go to war, and be able to go in as a jury duty. If a person is allow to shot at someone inwar they shold be allow to drink at 18. If they are given the responsibilities for there votes and being selected as jury or possibly drafted to go to war why give us these responsibilities when we can’t even drink at the age of 18? Is it because they don’t tust us at age 18, but let us have the responsibilitiesfor there votes. Does the Government don’t tust those who are under 21 and why can they treat us like an full adults for another 3 years?
